Get to know the wonders of Pla de Mallorca

Treurer’s farm is located in Pla de Mallorca, a region that encompasses 14 towns and is located in the island’s plain, hence the name. However, although much is said about the charming Tramuntana villages and the spectacular coastal towns with their beaches and promenades, el Pla is still unknown to many Mallorca visitors.

And the truth is that this region, with a mainly agrarian economy, is the one that most preserves the roots of the island culturally, gastronomically and in terms of landscape. This rich heritage of el Pla shire is what leads us to talk about it today, about its beauty, its uniqueness, but also about everything it can offer a visitor willing to discover inland Mallorca.

What is interesting that you know about Pla de Mallorca?

  1. What you can find in this rural region.
  2. The wonderful villages of Pla de Mallorca.
  3. The most important activities in the area.

1. What you can find in this rural region.

As we have mentioned, el Pla is a region that covers the central area of inland Mallorca, the result of a depression between Serra de Tramuntana and Serra de Llevant. However, this extensive area is not exactly flat either, since several mountains rise from it, including Puig de Randa, the highest point in this central region that offers spectacular panoramic views from where you can see the surrounding villages. A fully recommended experience.

This shire is especially recognizable for the large number of picturesque mills and wells that were once essential tools of the countryside and that, today, are preserved as monuments for their cultural and traditional value.

It’s not surprising that there is a Route of the Mills, that leads visitors to those in the best state of conservation, while at the same the path uncovers the multiple crops in the region. In fact, in el Pla the agricultural exploitation has always been key element in economy. Hence any persons who ventures this area can still see outstanding cereal fields to fruit trees.

But, without a doubt, the maximum exponent of agriculture and traditional peasant life are the possessions that you will find in this place, Mallorcan farms where the fields were worked. Although today not all of them continue to carry out this exploitation activity, these architectural constructions are still authentic jewels of the most rural Mallorca.

If you are curious, we invite you to visit ours, since walking through our olive groves and discovering their history is an extraordinary experience for those who want to know more about the most intimate and quiet side of the island.

On the other hand, the lands of Pla de Mallorca continue to house a great historical heritage that can be highly interesting for those most in love with history. The presence of settlers in this area since 2000 B.C. has given rise to a large number of archaeological sites, as well as architectural monuments from different historical moments.

In places like Son Fornés (Montuïri) it’s possible to find a Talayotic settlement, while in Costix or Algaida there are Sanctuaries of great importance on the island. You will also find multiple parish churches, the result of the relevance of Christian culture for the Balearic Islands. In fact, most of the population centers of Pla de Mallorca grew up attached to these buildings.

2. The wonderful villages of Pla de Mallorca.

  • Algaida. It’s a charming rural municipality in the center of the island. Its name has Arabic origin (the-base) and it’s a place where the Muslims put special interest in creating irrigated areas. In this area, the Talayotic sites are especially important, as well as its Puig de Randa, the highest peak in the center of the island.
  • Ariany. In addition to its pre-Talayotic sites, this municipality stands out for the beauty of its rural landscape with large cultivated areas, mills and wells that show the importance of agriculture and livestock as the main economic activities.
  • Costixt. This small municipality of el Pla has a great tradition in the cultivation of the land, conserving many architectural remains of great value (windmills, estates) coming from this main economic exploitation.
  • Lloret de Vistalegre. Agriculture has also historically been the main activity in this municipality, which is honored in the well-known Festa del Sequer, on the first Saturday in September, where figs and wine are the protagonists.
  • Llubi. In this municipality with a very important Islamic past, the most current Parish Church stands out, whose chapel dates from 1297 or the four Creus del terme, crosses that delimited the borders of the town.
  • Maria de la Salut. With its caves from the pre-Talayotic period, its agricultural tradition and landscape, and its Islamic ceramics, this municipality is truly charming.
  • Montuiri. Archaeology, architecture, medieval vestiges or a tradition related to the production of cereals and vineyards are the great heritage of this place, which by conserving the environment has managed to preserve a spectacular landscape.
  • Petra. Home to the Santuari de Bonany, a hermitage that has stood on Puig de Bonany since the 17th century, and to the House of Frai Juníper Serra, a Majorcan missionary in Alta California.
  • Porreres. With evidence of human presence dating back to prehistory, multiple archaeological sites, an Islamic past and documented existence of a Jewish quarter in the 14th century, this place is history in its purest form.
  • Sant Joan. Municipality in which you can find everything from pre-Talayotic caves to necropolises or hydraulic systems from the Talayotic era.
  • Santa Eugenia. Its name comes from the Bernat de Santa Eugènia farmhouse, a small medieval population center that during the Islamic period was the Benibazari farmhouse.
  • Senselles. With remains from the pre-Talayotic and Talayotic periods and from Roman and Arab domination, and witness to different revolts and rivalries with the neighboring community, this place is of great historical interest.
  • Sineu. Located in the very center of the island, it’s consolidated as one of the largest extensions of Pla de Mallorca. What was once one of the most important cities is a legacy of Roman, Arab and Christian history.
  • Vilafranca de Bonany. This rural town is characterized by a drier land where a delicious melon is grown, which should not be missed especially during the Melon Festival in September.

3. The most important activities in the area.

One of the oldest traditions in this region are the weekly markets that take place in each of the towns. One of the most important is the one taking place in Sineu, documented since 1252, and that is hold in its Plaça d’es Fossar every Wednesday. In it you can find everything from local to artisan products, including leather goods and clothing. But if you are interested in seeing a show of pure craftsmanship, we recommend a visit to the Gordiola Glass Factory and Museum (Algaida) where wonderful pieces of glass are created.

On the other hand, some of the most important festivities of the numerous celebrations that take place in this region are Sant Bartomeu, on August 24 in Montuïri, and Sant Honorat, on January 16 in Algaida. In both festivals it is possible to see in first person Els Cossiers, an ancient dance that dates back to the 14th century in which men try to prevent a lady from falling into the temptation of the devil.

Another of the most interesting summer events in the region is the Mancomunitat Pla de Mallorca International Music Festival, in which a wide variety of free concerts are held in churches and temples during the months of July, August and September. During the month of November in Llubí, the Fira de la Mel is celebrated, which focuses on teaching visitors what Balearic beekeeping is like and where it’s absolutely possible to taste the multiple honeys of the islands.

Finally, we can’t forget talking about something that will fascinate star lovers. In Costitx you can make a visit to the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca, a really entertaining experience for all the members of the family that, in addition, allows you to contemplate the night sky with its telescopes. There is no doubt that it would be a fascinating activity with which to finish discovering the Pla de Mallorca.
